Samal Island Eco-Tourism
Samal Island Mariculture Park, Samal Island
The first of its kind in the Philippines. An industrial park on sea. Named among Asia’s best projects. A project worth emulating by other local government units. The Samal Island Mariculture Park. Located in sitio Leydao, Kaputian District, in the storm-sheltered Island Garden City of Samal, this 224-hectare facility, which was formally inaugurated last August 2001, has been conceptualized by the local government in cooperation with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Souitheast Asian Development Center.
It is aimed to promote mariculture as a major livelihood of coastal fisherfolks, develop large-scale privately operated cage culture project; and provide appropriate infrastructure and equipment and favorable investment climate for efficient cage culture operations.
IGaCoS Mangrovetum, Samal Island
The IGaCoS mangrovetum is a field laboratory focused on the study and conservation of mangroves. The project is located in Bgy. San Isidro in IGACOS’s Babak District. It takes only 10 minutes from Davao City by ferryboat; the mangrovetum is at least another 45 minutes overland from the Babak pier.
There were only 11 true mangrove species and 20 mangrove associates in the area when the project started. Today, the count is up to 27 true mangroves and 23 mangrove associates – and increasing. The DENR technicians maintaining the mangrovetum are determined to propagate all of the 47 true mangrove species known to occur in the Philippines. There are five people’s organizations under the Coastal Environment Conservationists of Samal, Inc. (CECSI) who are helping them, providing the extra manpower needed in the project.
Aundanao Fish Sanctuary, Samal Island
Barangay Aundanao is located on the eastern coast of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS). Like most coastal areas, Aundanao’s fish and marine resources were heavily depleted due illegal practices of fishing and other destructive means of catching and extracting marine resources. In response to the situation, the barangay and the city government declare the coastal waters of Aundanao as a fish sanctuary. To date, Barangay Aundanao can now serve as a role model for other coastal communities, as well as a tourism destination.
The fish sanctuary, being located near a renowned beach area of Samal Island, has also provided an additional opportunity for the integration of tourism attractions. Aundanao is now a tourist and educational destination. A number of LGUs, institutions and families have visited the fish sanctuary to learn from the experience of Aundanao, relax and enjoy the beautiful underwater scenery and the white sand beach.

Marcos, former President of the Philippines.
